WEAVERVILLE – Sandra Jean Gore Cook, age 75, of Weaverville, died Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at Mission Hospital.

Mrs. Cook was born July 29, 1946 in Beckley, West Virginia and was the daughter of the late Christum and Juanita Neely Gore.  In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Ronald D. Cook who died in 2019.

Sandra was a 1968 graduate of West Virginia University, and taught Physical Education at North Buncombe High School in the late 1970s.  She later lived in Florida where she started the first girl’s soccer team in Temple Terrace that went on to be State Champions. Sandra was always an avid sports fan and loved watching soccer, football and basketball.

She  moved back to Buncombe County in 1994 and  in recent years was the office manager at Fields Mazda of Asheville. Sandra had an encyclopedic knowledge of auto parts and had a reputation for helping people get their cars repaired right, the first time! She loved her cats, and was very proud of her family’s military service, including her father in the Navy in WWII, her son Ronny who served in the Navy during the Persian Gulf War, and her brother Robert in the US Air Force who flew with the Thunderbirds.

Surviving are her daughter, Christina Broadhead and husband Steven of Utah; son, Ronny Cook of Asheville; brothers, Michael Gore and wife Sonya of West Virginia, Robert Gore of Texas; brother-in-law, David Cook and wife Sandra of Weaverville; grandchildren, Michael Twitchen, Gage Broadhead and fiancé Alyssa, and Dane Broadhead.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 30, 2022 in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Per the NC Governor, masks are required. Those who choose, may listen to the service on their car radio by tuning into FM 87.7, while in the parking lot of the funeral home.
