Sharon Elizabeth Garrison Phillips

Sharon Elizabeth Garrison Phillips, born May 29, 1943, passed away at home in Weaverville, North Carolina on March 11th, 2025.

A lifelong resident of Weaverville, Sharon was known for her independent spirit, witty sense of humor, and kind heart. While she may have often been too stubborn to accept help for herself, she was always willing to help others, and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a teacher's aide at Weaverville Elementary and later worked at Just Ducky Children's Clothing. A longtime member of Boyd’s Union Chapel, she served as a children’s Sunday School teacher there for many years.

In September of 1962, she married Edwin Phillips, who would remain her favorite person for the rest of her life, even as her deteriorating memory caused her to forget most other people. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her three children: Paul Phillips (Mary) of Weaverville, Patty Phillips of Asheville, and Amanda Bean (Scott) of Woodfin. She always made sure to attend every ball game, band concert, dance recital, and school play that her children participated in, and often volunteered behind the scenes. Every Sunday for years, she cooked a big dinner for the family after church, and everyone was always welcome.

One of her greatest joys in life was being Granny, both to her own grandchildren and to the friends they would bring over after school. Once a week for years, they would come over to play and have treats for "Granny Day." She always kept popsicles in the freezer and marshmallows in the pantry for all of them. She will be missed by all her grandchildren: Seth Phillips (Leah), Cheryl Phillips Brantley (Andrew), Jake Phillips, Jasper Bean, Arthur Bean, step-grandchildren Alex Clark (Jana) and Courtney Bennett (Joseph), honorary grandchild, Audrey Byrd, and great-granddaughter, Penelope Bennett.

Sharon is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Wilma Carlisle (Everette) and Judy Dendy; brothers-in-law, Russell Phillips and Robert Dale Phillips; and a special cousin and friend, Henrietta Phillips. She leaves behind several beloved nieces and nephews, with special gratitude to her niece, Sherry Phillips-Jernigan (Barry) for all her help and care over the years.

She was predeceased by her parents, William and Mary Garrison; her brother, William “Bill” (and wife, Jo) Garrison; her sister, Phyllis Rogers (and husband, John); her parents-in-law, Paul and Geneva Phillips; sisters-in-law, Marie Phillips and Doris Phillips; and brother-in-law, Fred Phillips.

Sharon will be remembered for her plucky personality, her sense of fun and caring (which often manifested as good-natured teasing) and her steadfast faith in God. We rejoice that she’s moved on to a better place free of suffering, and that she’s reunited with loved ones who have gone before her.

Services to honor Sharon’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 14, 2025, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home in Weaverville. Reverend Clark Henderson will be officiating. Burial will follow the funeral service in Clark’s Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, March 13, 2025, at West Funeral Home.
