THOMAS CLARK BROWN
ASHEVILLE - Thomas Clark Brown, age 77, of 16 Carrier Place, died Tuesday, December 31, 2013.
Mr. Brown was born January 5, 1936 in Knox County, TN. He attended North Carolina State College (now North Carolina State University). He was employed by Troitino & Brown, Inc. from 1957 until 1973 doing roadway, bridge, tunnel and major stone masonry projects on the Blue Ridge Parkway, in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, on Federal Lands Highways in North Carolina and Tennessee and interstate highways in North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee. He was employed by the City of Asheville in 1973 and retired as Public Works Director in 1987. He was a member of the American Public Works Association, serving as President of the North Carolina Chapter in 1985. After his retirement from the City of Asheville, he was employed by several consulting engineering firms before actually retiring in 2009. He was a member of West Asheville Baptist Church, Biltmore Masonic Lodge #446 AF&AM, the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and Oasis Shrine Temple.
A son of the late David Clark "Pete" and Olive Rhoades Brown, he was also preceded in death by his brother, George Gerald Brown.
Surviving are his wife of 29 years, Linda Thompson Brown; daughter, Katrina Killian and husband Bryan of Arden; son, Craig Brown and wife Patricia of Arden; stepsons, Mike Payne and wife Kim of Weaverville, Mark Payne and wife Vicki of Candler; sister Judy Garren of Arden; brother, Mike Brown and wife Joyce of Arden; grandsons, Matthew Payne and wife Karla; granddaughters, Jennifer Finley, Justine Payne and Alyssa Payne Steven and husband Jacob; great grandsons, Jack Steven and Trevor Finley; great granddaughters, Kailey and Jillian Payne, and several nieces and nephews.
His memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 4, 2014 in West Asheville Baptist Church with Reverend Stan Welch officiating. Burial will be in West Memorial Park with Masonic graveside rites by Biltmore Masonic Lodge, the lodge will open at 10:00 a.m.
The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the West Asheville Baptist Church Elevator Fund, the Shriners Hospitals for Children, one of the local animal rescue organizations, or the charity of one's choice.
