WEAVERVILLE – Thomas Oliver Marr, age 91, died Monday, April 22, 2024, at the Elizabeth House.
Mr. Marr was born May 9, 1932, in Minneapolis, MN to the late Marvel Cecel and Helen Hecker Marr. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with an engineering degree and immediately after served in the Navy as a chief ship engineer. He began his career with Oasis Oil Company in Tripoli, Libya, North Africa designing the oil retrieval platforms and fields. He spent much of the rest of his career with Conoco Phillips in the United Kingdom where he met Margaret (Maggie). With Conoco Phillips, he designed the Tension Leg Platform that allowed for drilling for oil in deep water. He received awards (Petroleum Hall of Fame in Houston, TX) and recognition for his design. He retired to the south coast of Spain where he and Maggie lived for more than 30 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Maggie Marr; daughters, Robin Marr Schottroff and Joanna Marr; and brothers, Robert and James Marr.
Surviving are his daughters, Alison Schaefer, and Jeannette Dalling; sons-in-law, Adrian Schottroff and wife Cathy and Miccio Mendoza Cartes; sister, Carolyn “Peggy” Marr Forbes; brother, Richard Marr; grandchildren, Nicholas Schaefer, Sarah Schaefer, Jeremy Schottroff, Logan Schottroff, and Liam Mendoza and wife Lisa; and great grandchildren, Olivia, Enzo, Jack and Chiara.
