THOMAS EUGENE "TOM" SMART
ASHEVILLE - Thomas Eugene "Tom" Smart, 80, passed away Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at CarePartners Solace Center.
Tom, a Buncombe County native, was born November 28, 1935 to the late William Thomas Smart and Barbara Goodlake Maupin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, William R. Smart and Samuel W. Smart; and a sister, Paulette M. King.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Patricia C. Smart; three daughters, Brenda S. Rhinehart and husband Ronnie of Candler, Susan S. Tedder and husband Neil of Candler, and Laurie S. Evans of Greenville, NC; four grandchildren, Matthew T. Rhinehart and wife Tammie of Candler, Whitney E. Tedder of Asheville, Bailey S. Evans and Benjamin H. Evans both of Greenville; and one great-grandson, Cole T. Rhinehart of Candler.
Tom graduated from Lee H. Edwards High School; served in the US Army, stationed at Presidio in San Francisco; and attended Mars Hill College. He worked in sales for Graybar in Raleigh and Oster Corp. in Charlotte. He also owned Triangle Supermarket and Lake Norman Marina in Denver, NC prior to returning to Asheville in 1982.
He enjoyed his family, hunting and the ROMEO Club. He was a 33 degree Mason and a member of the Oasis Shrine Temple.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday, December 4, 2015 in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville with the Rev. Veranita Alvord of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
