ALEXANDER– Vascal Harold Aiken, age 88, of Alexander, went to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday, November 30, 2017. Vascal was born April 25, 1929 in Buncombe County to the late J. Melvin and Lucille Kuykendall Aiken. In 1947 he graduated from French Broad High School and then went to River Rouge, Michigan and worked for Fabricon Products. He joined the Air Force in 1948 and was stationed at Johnson Air Force Base in Japan, before deploying to Korea during the Korean Conflict. While serving in the military he trained in General Radio Mechanic and Special Facsimile Transition. In August 1952 he received an honorable discharge as a Staff Sergeant. On February 4, 1953 he married Trula Belle Haney. He and Trula moved back to NC and Vascal worked for Freck Radio and Supply as a technician. In 1959, he turned to sales and represented Freck Radio for nine more years, calling on retail dealers in the western North Carolina area. In 1968 he joined Allison-Erwin sales organization and represented the Zenith line of electronics for the next twenty-three years. During these years with Allison-Erwin his outstanding sales efforts were rewarded five times by winning the Zenith US Top sales award. Vascal was a member and deacon of Alexander Baptist Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Clarence Aiken and sister, Adaline Aiken Miller. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Trula Haney Aiken; son, Roger Aiken and wife Renee of Alexander; grandsons, Tyler Aiken and wife Adelaide of Charlotte and Blake Aiken of Raleigh and brother, Jimmy Aiken of Asheville. Vascal was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was also eagerly anticipating the birth of his first great-grandchild in the spring. His funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 4, 2017 in Alexander Baptist Church with Reverends Gerald Sprinkle and Steve Rogers officiating. Burial will be in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory, Asheville. The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, December 3, 2017 at West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville where the body will remain until placed in the church one hour prior to the service. At other times the family will be at the home of Roger and Renee Aiken, 127 Old Macedonia Rd., Alexander, NC 28701. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Alexander Baptist Church, c/o Gerald Golden, 1179 Old NC 20 Hwy., Alexander, NC 28701.
