Vivian Madeline Shook

Today we are remembering the life of Vivian Madeline Shook and mourning her passing.

Vivian’s childhood was spent in Parker, Pennsylvania where she played with her older sister, Erla, in nearby woods and meadows. She enjoyed raising chickens and was an avid gardener. At age 17 she met her future husband Bill, and after being married in 1950 they began their family. Shortly thereafter, Bill was sent off to fight in the Korean War. Vivian and Bill, who was in the U.S. Navy for twenty years, moved every few years, eventually settling in Virginia upon Bill's retirement from the Navy in 1967. After their three kids grew up and left home, Bill and Vivian craved a change of pace, and followed their love of travel to see Mexico, many Caribbean islands, and much of the U.S. taking in many of the sights the various states had to offer, all while being able to return to their quiet Virginia farm life between trips. Vivian and Bill raised beef cattle, hogs, and rabbits as well as a very large garden. Great home raised meat, vegetables, and desserts, were always on the table when mealtime rolled around, and Vivian and Bill were very accomplished in the kitchen.

Eventually Vivian and Bill sold the farm in Virginia and moved to Weaverville, NC to live with their daughter Patti.  Vivian loved living close to her church and family, and being mere minutes from grocery stores, and her church friends.  Bill preceded Vivian in death in 2014, after a loving marriage of 64 years.

Vivian was very religious, always putting God and family first in her life.  She spent her days sharing her love and wisdom with her family. We will forever be grateful to have spent the time we did with this wonderful lady, and we will spend the rest of our lives sharing the lessons and wisdom she instilled in us all.
