WILLIAM E. “BILL” HAYES WEAVERVILLE – William E. “Bill” Hayes, age 92, of Weaverville died Wednesday, January 4, 2017. Mr. Hayes was born August 10, 1924 in Spartanburg, SC to Walter Dean and Ethel Mae Neal Hayes and was a resident of Buncombe County since 1961. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and member of the Destroyer Escort & Sailors Association. Bill loved his family, enjoyed time at the lake and participating in a Senior Bowling League. He owned and operated Weaverville Variety Store and the Marshall Thrift Store. Mr. Hayes was a member of St. Eugene Catholic Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, Alvin and James Hayes; and sister, Ann Lois Miller. Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Mary Heintz Hayes; daughters, Linda Hines and husband Lee, Debora Howell and husband Doug; sons, Larry Hayes and wife Freda, Rick Hayes and wife Kim, Kenneth Hayes and wife Teresa; 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. The family would like to thank CarePartners Hospice and Mars Hill Retirement Community for the love and care shown to Mr. and Mrs. Hayes. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 9, 2017, in St. Eugene Catholic Church, 72 Culvern Street, Asheville, celebrated by Father Patrick Cahill. The family will greet friends following the Mass. Burial will be in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. Memorial contributions may be made to Care Partners Hospice Foundation, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.
