ALEXANDER –“For God so loved the world, that He sent his only son, that whoever believes in Him shall not die, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16. During the early morning hours of Saturday, May 1, 2021 Barbara Sue Clemmons Shook Worley, entered into life everlasting surrounded by those whom she loved and treasured most in this world.
Barbara Sue was born to Edith Freeman Clemmons and Edward Charles Clemmons on January 11, 1946. She was a lovely girl with a beautiful smile who shortly after high school married Gordon Ray Shook, the love of her life. She and Ray built a home full of love and happiness as they raised their two children, Traci and Scott, instilling in them a love of Christ.
Barbara dearly loved her children, grandchildren and her church with all her heart. For 43 years, she served as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher at Macedonia Baptist Church. Barbara also served as Hospitality Director for 40 years and was a very talented cook who prepared meals with love and grace. Everyone was always welcome in her home and at her table. She made the most wonderful desserts and peanut butter fudge which her family looked forward to each and every Christmas. She served as Church Secretary for 23 years and as a classroom assistant at Woodfin Elementary School in the Buncombe County School System for 17 years.
Later in life, Barbara married into the Worley family and was welcomed by Tim (Sonia), Jeff (Connie) and grandsons as one of their own. She and Larry loved to travel and enjoyed making great memories. Barbara and Larry were members of Zion Hill Baptist Church. With a servant’s heart and love for others, her life was a portrait of devotion to God and he family.
Even as the ravages of Alzheimer’s began to take a toll on her mind and her body, her spirit and soul continued to worship her Lord as she sang the gospel hymns that she cherished so much. What a joyful Heavenly homecoming as Jesus welcomed her home on Saturday with “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” Her family rejoices for a life well lived and the example of God’s grace Barbara freely shared to all who knew and loved her.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Edith Clemmons and her brother, Edward Ronald Clemmons, her husband, Gordon Ray Shook and his parents, Finley and Della Kate Shook, and her beloved cousin, Frances Hall. What a reunion they are having in the presence of Jesus!
Barbara is survived by her husband of eight and a half years, Larry Worley, her daughter, Traci (John) Stewart, and her son, Scott (Michelle) Shook. Her grandchildren, Katie (Jake) Green, Andrew (Haley) Stewart, Matthew and Madi Shook.
