Johnnie DeBruhl Smith

ASHEVILLE—Johnnie DeBruhl Smith, age 88, of Asheville, died Monday, July 4, 2011. Mrs. Smith was born June 13, 1923, in Madison County and was a resident of Buncombe County for most of her life. She retired from Kellwood Manufacturing. She was a member of Gashes Creek Baptist Church. She was a daughter of the late Walter and Edna Sprinkle DeBruhl. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl Smith, Jr., who died in 1996; son, David Hartman Smith; great granddaughter, Tonya Hensley; and brothers, Z.V. and Byron DeBruhl. Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Diane Camby Smith; granddaughters, Kimberly Hensley and Melissa Walker; grandson, Matthew David Smith; great grandchildren, Jessica, Anthony, Brandi, Haley, Natalie, Amanda, and Cassie Hensley, Michael Walker, Jr., Christian Walker, and Hunter Fowler; sisters, Wauline Riddle and Lois Atkins; and brother, Tilson DeBruhl. Her funeral service will be held at 2:30 PM, Saturday, July 9, 2011, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, with Rev. Charles Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Friday at the funeral home. Flowers are welcome.
