WEAVERVILLE – Harriette Mildred Smith McVay, age 99 of Weaverville, joined her savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, July 15, 2018 at Mayflower Senior Care. Mrs. McVay was born August 30, 1918 in Kane County, Illinois to the late Harry Van and Carrie Mae Stainfield Smith. She was a lifetime resident of the Kansas City area. Harriette was one of the first women to graduate from the business school at the University of Kansas in 1939. She was a lifetime member of the Sigma Chapter of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, where she was named “Woman of the Year” in 1987. She also served as President of the Phi Chi Theta Business Sorority. Harriette later went on to work for the TWA airlines, and Prudential Life Insurance Company. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Thomas E. McVay who died in 1982; and a son Richard S. McVay in 2011. Surviving are her son, Thomas David McVay and wife Tina Marie of Weaverville; sister- in-law, Lou McVay; nephew, Jeff McVay; and grandchildren, Joseph Marks and wife Crystal, Taylor Bell and husband Jordan, Katherine Benton and husband Micah, Michelle McVay, and Nicole McVay. She also has 5 great grandchildren; Shae Marks, Heath Fulbright and Evelyn, Lyla, and Audrey Bell. Her memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, August 6, 2018 in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave. Weaverville with Reverend Sam McLamb officiating. Burial was on July 19, 2018 in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Kansas City, MO. For those who desire, condolences may be offered to the family under Mrs. McVay’s obituary at www.WestFamilyFuneralServices.com.
