Rev. Dr. Robert Morrison Brittain

LARGO, FL - Rev. Dr. Robert Morrison Brittain, 85, of Largo, Florida, passed away on Sunday, May 30th, 2021.

Robert Brittain was born in Weaverville, North Carolina, on September 17th, 1935 to Verona and Lula Cole Brittain.  He had one older brother, the late Rev. Wendell Brittain.

Robert M. Brittain attended Asbury College and Temple University.  He earned his Masters of Divinity at Emory University and his Doctorate of Divinity from Drew University.

He met Lurline Cope Brittain while at Asbury College and they were married on September 2nd, 1956.

Robert had a long career in the Methodist ministry, serving congregations in Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, and Florida.   In 1964, he founded Trinity United Methodist Church, in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

He served multiple congregations across Florida: Largo United Methodist Church, St. Lukes United Methodist Church, St. Petersburg, Lighthouse Point United Methodist Church in Pompano Beach, Arlington United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, and Jupiter-Tequesta Methodist  Church.   Bob and Lurly retired to Hobe Sound, Florida and later moved back to Largo, Florida near the families of sons, Gregory and Jeff.

Bob was a member of the Rotary Club and Ministerial Associations. He had a passion for spending time with his family. He loved the North Carolina mountains, the Florida beaches,  traveling  across  the  United  States  and  many other countries,  hiking,  camping, and renovating the Brittain century-old home (built 1889), in Weaverville.

Robert is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lurly Brittain, three children, eleven grandchildren, and three great granddaughters.

Daughter, Lynn and husband, Howell M. Tucker Jr. & twins - Mary and husband Hunter, and Howell III of Tallahassee;  grandchildren, Justin  and  wife,  Katina  Wiwi,  and  daughter  Ella; Emily and husband Justin Reker and daughters, Jemma and Jaycee; and Bobby and wife, Michelle Wiwi.

Son Gregory  Brittain  and  wife,  Patricia  of  Largo,  Florida,  and  grandchildren  Gregory  and  wife, Delaney; Kristen Brittain, Kyle Brittain and wife Angelina, and Chad Brittain.

Son Jeffrey Brittain and wife, Cherryl of Tampa, Florida, and grandchildren Taylor Brittain and Fiancee Kaitlynn, and Lauren Brittain.

Visitation will be held at West Funeral Home, Weaverville, NC, Thursday June 10th from 6pm to 8pm.

Funeral services will be held at Salem United Methodist Church, Weaverville at 10 am, Friday June 11th, 2021. Reverend Kent Smith and Rev. Dr. Tim Brittain will officiate.  Burial will follow in Clark’s Chapel Cemetery, Weaverville.
