Sally Elizabeth Matthews Roberts

ASHEVILLE – Sally Elizabeth Matthews Roberts, age 87, of Asheville, died Monday, January 3, 2022.

A native of Asheville, she was born September 22, 1934, to the late John Russell and Dora Garrison Matthews. She was a resident of Buncombe County but lived all over the country during her childhood.

Sally was a graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School and graduate of Asheville-Biltmore College where she was 1955 May Queen.

Sally started work in banking in downtown Asheville at the age of 16 and held various other positions throughout her life.  Sally spent countless hours working for programs such as “Meals on Wheels.”  Sally was a substitute teacher at Asheville High and a member of Central United Methodist Church.

Sally was an avid cook and her recipes were featured in the published book “Cake Ladies.”  Sally loved to travel domestic and abroad.  Sally always enjoyed the company of her dogs, from Cocker Spaniels to Toy Poodles and often went walking for exercise.  She was a very generous and caring person.

Sally was a breast cancer survivor.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Fulton “Fulty” Roberts, to whom she was married 65 years.

Surviving are her sons, Steven Roberts and wife Rhonda of Asheville and John Roberts and wife Tracy of Charlotte; granddaughter, Jenna and cousin Carolyn Waddell.

Her funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, January 15, 2022, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville. Reverend Dr. Robert Blackburn will officiate. Burial will follow in West Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home.
